Expressive & Receptive Language Therapy

Helping individuals understand and express themselves more effectively through evidence-based language therapy.

What is Language Therapy?

Language therapy addresses difficulties with understanding language (receptive) and using language to communicate (expressive). Unlike articulation therapy, which focuses on how sounds are produced, language therapy focuses on the meaning, structure, and social use of language.

Receptive Language

The ability to understand spoken and written language:

  • • Following directions
  • • Understanding questions
  • • Comprehending stories
  • • Understanding vocabulary

Expressive Language

The ability to communicate thoughts and needs:

  • • Using words and sentences
  • • Asking and answering questions
  • • Telling stories
  • • Using correct grammar

Signs You or Your Child May Benefit

In Children:

  • Late to begin talking
  • Limited vocabulary for age
  • Difficulty following directions
  • Struggles to form sentences
  • Trouble answering questions
  • Difficulty with reading comprehension

In Adults:

  • Word-finding difficulties (aphasia)
  • Trouble following conversations
  • Difficulty expressing thoughts clearly
  • Reading and writing challenges after stroke

Our Approach

At Clear Sky Speech Therapy, we use evidence-based techniques tailored to each individual's needs, age, and goals. For children, therapy is play-based and engaging. For adults, we focus on functional communication for daily life.

We work closely with families to ensure skills learned in therapy transfer to home, school, and work environments.
