Articulation Therapy

Clear, confident speech through targeted articulation and speech sound therapy.

What is Articulation Therapy?

Articulation therapy helps individuals learn to produce speech sounds correctly. While language therapy focuses on what we say, articulation therapy focuses on how we say it—the physical production of sounds using the lips, tongue, teeth, and palate.

Common Articulation Challenges:

Substitutions

Replacing one sound with another (e.g., "wabbit" for "rabbit")

Omissions

Leaving sounds out (e.g., "ca" for "cat")

Distortions

Producing sounds incorrectly (e.g., lisps)

Additions

Adding extra sounds (e.g., "buhlue" for "blue")

Who Benefits from Articulation Therapy?

Children

Most children develop speech sounds in a predictable order. When sounds don't develop as expected, articulation therapy can help. Signs your child might benefit include:

  • Speech is difficult to understand for unfamiliar listeners
  • Frustration when not understood
  • Persistent lisps or other sound errors
  • Not producing age-appropriate sounds

Adults

Adults may seek articulation therapy for various reasons:

  • Childhood speech errors never addressed
  • Motor speech disorders (dysarthria, apraxia)
  • Speech changes from stroke or neurological conditions
  • Professional or personal desire for clearer speech

Our Treatment Approach

Articulation therapy is systematic and structured. We start with sounds in isolation, then build to syllables, words, sentences, and finally conversation. For children, therapy is always play-based and engaging.

The Articulation Therapy Hierarchy:

  1. 1. Isolation (just the sound)
  2. 2. Syllables (sound + vowel)
  3. 3. Words (beginning, middle, end positions)
  4. 4. Phrases and sentences
  5. 5. Conversation and carryover
